 Q. I've been taking antidepressants for the last year. The drugs do help, but should I stop taking them before I try to conceive?
A. If you only have a borderline need for the drugs, then consult your doctor to see about getting weaned off of them before you try to get pregnant. But if you feel your health really requires that you continue taking the medication, consult your physician to make sure that you are taking one of the drugs considered acceptable during pregnancy. Plenty of women have continued to take antidepressant drugs during pregnancy with no ill effects, but make sure your doctor knows that you are on the medication, and has approved the specific drug you are taking as safe.
