My IVF Story: Day 45 “The Neurotic and the HCG Shot”

Current Drugs taken: HCG Trigger Shot
Mood: Feeling excited

Tonight is my trigger shot to make me ovulate. I will take this shot tonight at exactly 9:00 pm and will go for my embryo retrieval 36 hours later.

I have made myself a little bit crazy by googling any words related to this trigger shot. “Will it hurt? Will I get sick from it?” But if you type in negative questions, you also receive negative answers. One woman shared her traumatic story how she got sick from the shot; another woman had to be hospitalized and another said she could barely walk the next day. By the time 9:00 pm rolled around, I was a mess! I was convinced that I would get sick immediately and feel terrible for the next two days.

Do you want to know what actually happened? Absolutely nothing.

I called my husband into the bathroom at exactly 8:56 pm to help me prepare the shot. He prepared it easily and then with a quick motion, jabbed it into my lower abdomen. I squeezed my eyes shut, waited for the pain and the side effects.

Left eye open. Hmmm. Feeling okay.
Right eye open. Feeling pretty good. That didn’t hurt at all.

The moral of the story is that the shot was painless and I experienced no side effects from it. The other moral of the story is googling IVF stories will only make you more scared. Unless it’s my IVF story, that is. Then it’s okay.

good to know! I am doing mine in my upper arm when the time comes. I actually had to have everything pushed back because I went for my baseline and I have yet to have my menstral cycle. Apparently I "broke through" the OC and now it is all screwed up! So I have to wait to get my period B4 they will move forward. Still on 20 units of Lupron a day. Sometimes I get discouraged and my hormones go crazy, I am just trying to keep myself grounded.
